Differences between the old and new regulations

Clarification of battery categories:
The new battery regulation clarifies its scope of application, covering all types of batteries in the EU market (except for specific purposes), and further subdivided into five categories: portable batteries, starting lighting and automotive ignition batteries, light power batteries, automotive power batteries and industrial batteries.

More stringent requirements:
The new regulations specify a number of new or more stringent requirements, including the calculation of product carbon footprint, the use of recycled materials, the restriction of heavy metal hazardous substances, performance and durability, the removability and replaceability of batteries, safety requirements, due diligence, and the disposal of waste batteries, etc. These requirements need to be evaluated by the EU Notified Body during implementation. Transition from directive to regulation:
Unlike directives, the new battery regulation is a legal act of the European Union and has direct legal effect on all member states without further review and conversion. This means that the regulation is more mandatory and authoritative.
